Blues fans at the 7th Annual Silver Spring Blues Festival will enjoy a star-studded line-up of the best in local, regional and national blues talent. The Silver Spring Blues Festival, presented by the Silver Spring Town Center, Inc., is Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 10 am to 9 pm on two stages in Downtown Silver Spring.
Headlining the Festival’s “Fountain Stage” is New York blues guitar prodigy Solomon Hicks, known by his fans in Harlem as “King Solomon.” Solomon has been playing professionally since the age of thirteen. His King Solomon Hicks’ Band of Brothers is a popular fixture of the music scene in New York City.
An eclectic musician, Solomon excels at a number of styles ranging from jazz, blues, classical, gospel, R&B, funk and classic rock. He has been the lead guitarist at New York’s Cotton Club since age 13, and frequently performs at B.B. King’s Blues Club, and other famous venues. Now 20 years old, he tours nationally and internationally, performing with artists like Neyo, Tony Bennett, Antoinette Montague, and Elvin Bishop.
This year’s Silver Spring Blues Festival also features the nationally-acclaimed Billy Thompson Band and the Lisa Lim Band. Billy Thompson has been delivering guitar work that has electrified audiences in the U.S. and throughout Europe, setting the tone for this veteran musician’s sizzling performances, both live and in studio. Billy has played with legends such as Little Milton, Albert King, Earl King, and Art Neville, while opening for the likes of Robert Cray, B.B. King, Sonny Landreth, The Neville Brothers and Joe Cocker, to name a few.
A multiple Washington Area Music Association (Wammie) Award winner as Best Modern Rock Instrumentalist, Lisa Lim has been touring, performing solo, in duos, and with her various bands over the past two decades. Her blazing lead, slide and rhythmic guitar chops leave both fans and critics breathless. Lisa brings her unmistakable guitar sound to over 200 live shows a year with an energy and passion unmatched in the DC/VA/MD music scene. Other “Fountain Stage” artists include the Legendary Warner Williams, Anthony “Swamp Dog” Clark, Nadine Rae and the AllStars, and the popular School of Rock.
In the morning, Silver Spring blues fans will enjoy an exciting offering of acoustic blues at the Market Stage, located on Veterans Plaza, beginning at 10 am. The Market Stage line-up will include nationally-known acoustic guitarist Rick Franklin, the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Ensemble, Oziel & Jackson, Miles Spicer and Pearl Bailes, and a harmonica workshop offered by Geoff “Stingy Brim” Seals.
Leading up to the Blues Festival, there will be a number of free blues performances on Veterans Plaza, produced by Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. A Blues Festival Kick-Off party will be held at the El Golfo Restaurant in Silver Spring on Saturday, June 13, starting at 6 pm.
