Our first-ever “Silver Spring Blues Week” (June 8 – June 15) includes live blues performances, and food and drink specials throughout downtown Silver Spring.  As of today, the venues include Fire Station 1, Eggspectations, Zev’s, McGinty’s, and the Big Greek Cafe, and others.

Lisa has plans to present blues bands on Veterans Plaza during that week, and we expect to present popular singer/songwriter Patty Reese at McGinty’s on Thursday night.

The 4th Silver Spring Blues Festival takes place on Saturday, June 16, from 10 am to 9 pm on two stages—the Fountain Stage on Ellsworth Drive, and the Market State on Veterans Plaza at the Fenton Street Market.  Like last year, we’ll have acoustic blues music on the Market Stage, with some incredible performers including Eleanor Ellis, Ruben Dobbs of Swampcandy, Sheryl Sears, Gina DeSimone, and the Archie Edwards Blues Ensemble.  Our thanks go to the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation for producing the Market Stage program.  Performances on the Market Stage go from 10 am to 3 pm.

On the Fountain Stage, we’ll have a dizzying array of acoustic & electric blues performances from 2 pm to 9 pm.  Starting at 2 pm, we have a solo guitar performance from NEA honoree Warner Williams, followed by the School of Rock, Nate Foley & FLLD, the Moonshine Society, Fast Eddie & the Slowpokes, The Unruly Blues Band, the DC Blues Society Band featuring Ayaba Bey, and, for the finale, Clarence “The Blues Man” Turner.

There will be an after-party at McGinty’s featuring the popular group “Hard Swimmin’ Fish” starting at 10 pm.

Moonshine Society at the Silver Spring Blues Festival

Moonshine Society delivers high energy roots rock, blues, and old school R&B in a style guaranteed to keep audiences dancing, toes tapping, and the drinks flowing. An international sensation often compared to Susan Tedeschi, Alabama Shakes, and Tina Marie, the band is comprised of A-List players including powerful vocalist Black Betty (inductee into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2012).

Moonshine Society’s debut album “Live in Shanghai” was released independently in late 2011. The full length album was recorded at the House of Blues and Jazz (Shanghai, China) after Chinese film star Lin Dong Fu (owner) personally selected and invited the band for a three month stay. Although a favorite at many college rock venues, they’ve really made waves in the international blues scene thrilling audiences at festivals with a fresh, younger take on the classic American roots style.

The band has performed with George Clinton & Funkadelic, Snoop Dogg, Peaches, Roomful of Blues, WuTang Clan, Everclear, Puddle of Mud, Drowning Pool, and more. Members of the Society have performed and recorded with artists such as John Mayer, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Betty Lyvette, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Nighthawks, Brian Eno, and Pinetop Perkins, among others.

“I now have new respect for the Boston music scene,” said Tony Van Veen, CEO/President of Disc Makers after the band brought down the house at the Disc Makers Boston Party in 2008. The band has made their way around the world throughout the US, Cuba, and China, landing them as the #1 Blues Band in China on Reverbnation, “#1 Blues/Jazz Band in Shanghai” in TimeOut Magazine, “Top Don’t Miss Show in Shanghai” from Delta Airlines Sky Mag, and more.

Now featured on many major, college, internet and XM stations, Black Betty delivers aggressive yet graceful vocals, and shows that girls can be every bit as strong as guys while growling, crooning, and sweetly serenading.

Blues enthusiasts, college kids, burlesque lovers, and even biker bar regulars come together on the dance floors of a Moonshine Society show. Established in Boston, MA in 2006, the group made appearances throughout the USA and Cuba and relocated to Washington DC at the end of 2008. Today, the Society can be seen at clubs throughout the East Coast and internationally at various festivals, clubs, private functions, and USO bases.

Swampcandy Plays the Silver Spring Blues Festival at Downtown Silver Spring!

Swampcandy has shared their aggressive, stomping Mississippi Delta Blues and cross-genre sets locally, nationally and internationally — including:  the Baltimore/Annapolis/Wash. D.C. & Virginia area, and venturing even further to Key West, Vermont, Philly, NYC, Chicago, Minnesota, Colorado & the San Francisco Bay Area. This unforgettable, rock your boots band, has even amazed the ears for fans throughout the U.K.!

Swampcandy was started as a solo project by Ruben Dobbs in 2007, after years of playing and fronting bands that ranged from Zappaesque to Americana to Pop Metal. In 2010 Swampcandy added Joey Mitchell, a talented upright bass player that plays kick drum.  He is sought after regionally for his skills on the bass ranging from Jazz to Bluegrass and everything in between.  The signature sound of Swampcandy is found within their ability to shift tempo and dynamics in order to emphasize lyrical content.  To watch them play one would think they share a brain.

While Mississippi Delta Blues is the back bone of the Swampcandy sound, the vast pallet of Ruben Dobbs, as a song writer, brings a rainbow of influences to the table to create a stimulating performance free from the cookie cutter sound of an artist strictly tied to one genre. In their non-blues tunes hints of old country, old time and bluegrass can be found as well as gypsy jazz and more modern influences like Radio Head and Gillian Welch. His voice and lyrics speak to the listener from the depths of experience.  The sound comes from the mountain. from the farm, from the swamp and from an honest pure place where nothing can hide.

See The Unruly Blues Band at the 4th Annual Silver Spring Blues Festival!

The Unruly Blues Band will perform at the 4th Annual Silver Spring Blues Festival at Downtown Silver Spring.  The Festival takes place Saturday, June 16, 2012, from 10 am to 11 pm, on two stages in downtown Silver Spring.

ImageThe Unruly Blues Band is Lance Nuckolls, lead guitar and vocals; Dale Hayman, harmonica and vocals; Tony Byrd, bass; Bobby Gullace, drums, and Saskia Van Oot, lead vocals.

Their name comes from their very entertaining on-stage presence (some have also called it “antics”) and their ‘eclectic blues’ style of music that includes- Chicago, Delta, Texas Memphis, Swing, Rumba, Rumba, Rock and Country blues. They enjoy each other’s company and the music they play… and it shows!  Saskia, the lead singer, has a professional theatrical background. She truly lights up the stage and makes a unique connection with the audiences. Her performances have been fondly referred to as a combination of Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, and Marcia Ball.

In 2011, they tied for first place at the D.C. Blues Society’s International Blues Challenger “Battle of the Bands.”  That was a great evening, which validated that they are doing something right! Unruly Blues has been featured in The Frederick News Post’s “72 Hours” and in the January 2010 edition of Frederick Magazine.

They tailor each of our shows to the type of venue and the audience- from biker festivals, to black tie events, to small pubs, to family friendly venues, to private events.
